Sixty thousand men and women from New Hampshire were sent to every corner of
the globe during World War II; 1,600 did not return. While monuments were
erected throughout the state to honor these brave men and women, few rival the Cathedral
of the Pines’ Altar of the Nation, built in 1946 and recognized by Congress as
a national memorial in 1957.
